Limestone & heritage homes
Why limestone and heritage walls are different
Older Perth homes – especially around Fremantle, Cottesloe, Subiaco and Guildford – are often built from limestone, lime render or soft early brick. These materials breathe: they absorb and release moisture with the weather. A modern, impermeable exterior film seals that moisture in, and the pressure forces the paint (and sometimes the surface) off the wall.
| Substrate | What it needs |
|---|---|
| Natural limestone | Breathable mineral or permeable acrylic; gentle cleaning, no harsh sealing |
| Lime render | Vapour-permeable system compatible with lime; flexible fillers |
| Soft / heritage brick | Breathable masonry coating; careful prep, no sandblasting |
| Timber fretwork & joinery | Flexible enamel; repair rot, prime bare timber |
How we approach a heritage repaint
- Assess the substrate and any existing coatings – sometimes old impermeable paint needs careful removal.
- Gentle cleaning – low-pressure wash, never aggressive blasting that erodes soft stone.
- Repair with compatible materials – lime-based fillers and render where appropriate.
- Breathable primer and topcoats suited to limestone, lime render or soft brick.
- Protect the detailing – fretwork, brackets, posts and window surrounds that give the home its character.
If your home is heritage-listed or in a heritage precinct, check for any local-council colour or material requirements before work starts. For period-appropriate colours, see our exterior colour schemes guide.
Heritage homes we paint across Perth
We regularly work on character and limestone homes in Fremantle, Cottesloe and Subiaco, plus other older riverside and coastal suburbs. Coastal heritage homes face salt as well as sun, so the system has to handle both – see best paint for the WA sun. For pricing, our exterior painting cost guide covers the factors involved.
Limestone & heritage painting FAQs
How do you paint a limestone house?
With a breathable, vapour-permeable system over gentle preparation, never a sealed impermeable film that traps moisture in the porous stone.
Can you paint a heritage or Federation home?
Yes, using breathable systems and careful detailing. If the home is heritage-listed or in a heritage area, check any local-council requirements first.
Why not use normal exterior paint on limestone?
Limestone must breathe. A non-permeable film traps moisture, which leads to blistering, salt damage and peeling.
Which Perth suburbs have the most limestone and heritage homes?
Fremantle, Cottesloe, Subiaco and Guildford, along with parts of Perth’s older riverside and coastal areas.
