Painters in Fremantle for heritage and limestone

Fremantle has one of Perth’s largest collections of limestone, Victorian and Federation buildings. Many cottages have limestone walls and timber joinery dating back to the late 1800s.

Limestone needs to breathe. Sealing it with the wrong paint traps moisture inside the stone, which then flakes and crumbles (spalling). Fixing that costs far more than a repaint, so we check each wall and choose a breathable system first.

The port and ocean also bring salt air, especially closer to the coast. Walls are washed before priming, and older paint is tested for lead before sanding. Our exterior house painting page covers both steps.

Fremantle painting questions

Not always. Limestone that has never been painted is often best left bare. If yours is already painted, we use a system that lets moisture escape rather than sealing it in. We check for flaking, damp and salt damage before recommending anything, and explain the options in your quote.

You may, depending on the property. Many buildings in the area are heritage listed or sit in heritage areas, and exterior changes can need approval. Check with the City of Fremantle before changing colours or materials. Our colour consultation can give you a period scheme to take with you.

If it was painted before the 1970s, it may well have. Lead dust from sanding is a health risk, especially for children and pregnant women. We test suspect paint first and, if lead is found, prepare it in a way that controls dust and clean-up.

We wash every exterior wall with fresh water before priming, because salt left on the surface stops paint from bonding. Homes near the ocean and harbour collect more salt than those further inland, such as in Palmyra. We also check metal fixings for rust and treat them before painting.
