Paint & durability in WA
What the WA sun actually does to paint
Perth gets some of the highest UV levels of any Australian capital, and that’s what ages exterior paint – not just time. Over a few summers you’ll see it:
- Fading – UV breaks down pigments, so strong colours wash out, dark walls worst of all.
- Chalking – the binder degrades and leaves a powdery film that rubs off on your hand.
- Cracking & peeling – heat makes walls expand and contract daily; a brittle, cheap film can’t move with them and lets go.
- Salt attack – near the coast (Cottesloe, Scarborough, Fremantle), airborne salt accelerates every one of the above.
The fix isn’t more paint – it’s the right paint, over the right preparation.
What to look for in a paint for the WA climate
| Property | Why it matters in Perth |
|---|---|
| UV resistance | Keeps colour and binder intact under high UV – the single most important property here |
| Flexibility / elasticity | Moves with daily thermal expansion so the film doesn’t crack, especially on render |
| Breathability | Lets moisture escape from double-brick and limestone instead of blistering off |
| Heat / IR reflectance | Reflects solar heat, lowering surface temperature and slowing degradation |
| Mould & dirt resistance | Shrugs off the mould and grime that build on shaded, south-facing walls |
| Adhesion | Bonds for the long term to the specific substrate – render, brick, fibre-cement or timber |
Paint types compared
| Type | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Premium exterior low-sheen acrylic | Most Perth homes – render, brick, fibre-cement | The everyday workhorse: strong UV resistance and colour retention |
| Exterior membrane / “weathershield” range | Sun-exposed and weathered walls | Thicker, more flexible film that bridges hairline cracks |
| Elastomeric coating | Render with movement or fine cracking | Highly flexible; excellent crack-bridging, needs correct build thickness |
| Heat-reflective roof coating | Metal and concrete-tile roofs | Lowers roof and attic temperature; see our roof painting service |
Colour matters as much as the paint
Two walls in the same premium paint can age very differently depending on colour. Lighter colours reflect more heat and show fading less, so they generally last longer on sun-facing elevations. Deep charcoals and strong colours look striking but run hotter and fade faster – if you love a dark look, keep it to sheltered or feature walls and choose a range with UV-stable tinters.
The same logic applies to roofs: a lighter or heat-reflective roof colour can noticeably reduce how much heat the house takes on through a Perth summer.
Brands Perth painters commonly specify
Most established WA painters work with the premium exterior ranges from the major Australian manufacturers – for example Dulux Weathershield, Wattyl Solagard and Taubmans exterior lines. These are built for Australian sun and carry UV-stable, flexible formulations.
The brand matters less than three things: choosing the right range for your substrate, applying the correct number of coats over proper preparation, and matching the colour to each wall’s exposure. A quality product applied over poor prep still fails early.
How we spec paint for your home
As a registered WA painting contractor (Licence 7956), we inspect each elevation, identify the substrate and its condition, and specify a UV-stable system matched to your home and its exposure – then set it all out in one fixed written quote, including the products and number of coats. For what that typically costs, see our exterior painting cost guide, or explore our exterior painting service.
Best paint for the WA sun – FAQs
What is the best type of paint for Perth’s climate?
A quality UV-stable exterior acrylic (a weathershield-class membrane) in a lighter colour. It resists fading, chalking and cracking far better than budget paint under WA sun.
Do lighter colours last longer in the sun?
Yes. Lighter colours reflect more heat and show fading less, so they generally hold up longer than deep, dark colours on sun-facing walls.
How long should good exterior paint last in Perth?
A quality system over sound, well-prepared surfaces commonly lasts 8–12 years; sun-facing and coastal walls sit at the shorter end.
Is expensive exterior paint worth it in WA?
Usually yes. Premium UV-resistant paint costs more per litre but holds colour and protects longer, which lowers cost across the repaint cycle.
Coastal & salt-air homes
Near the coast – Cottesloe, Scarborough, City Beach, Fremantle – salt in the air speeds up every form of paint failure. Salt draws moisture, works into tiny cracks and lifts coatings from the edges, so prep and product matter even more on a beachside home:
- Wash first – salt and grime must come off before painting, and a yearly rinse extends the finish.
- Seal and prime properly so salt and moisture cannot get under the film.
- Use a flexible, UV-stable exterior membrane that resists salt and moves with the wall.
- Protect metal fixtures – gutters, railings and fittings corrode faster near the sea.
The payoff is a coat that lasts closer to its full life instead of failing early in the salt and sun.
