Interior vs Exterior Paint

Interior vs exterior paint

Interior and exterior paints are built for different jobs. Exterior paint is engineered for UV, weather and movement, with flexible resins and UV-stable pigments. Interior paint is formulated for a smooth finish, washability and low odour indoors. You cannot reliably swap one for the other – and in Perth, using the wrong one outdoors fails fast.

How they differ

PropertyInterior paintExterior paint
UV resistanceLow – not needed indoorsHigh – keeps colour under the sun
FlexibilityFirm, smooth filmFlexible – moves with heat and cold
Weather & moistureNot weatherproofSheds rain, resists mould and salt
WashabilityHigh – scrubbable finishesDurable but finish-focused less
Odour / VOCsLow-odour options for occupied roomsCan be higher – made for outdoors
The resins and additives are the real difference: exterior paint trades a little smoothness for the flex and UV protection a wall outdoors needs.

Can you use one for the other?

Interior paint outside: no. It has none of the UV or weather resistance a Perth exterior needs, so it fades, chalks and peels within a season or two.

Exterior paint inside: not recommended. It can carry higher odour and VOCs and is formulated for durability rather than the smooth, washable finish and low smell you want in a living space. In a pinch on a well-ventilated utility area it will survive, but it is the wrong tool for bedrooms and living rooms.

Choosing the finish

Within each type, the sheen matters too. Indoors, low-sheen or matt suits most walls, with washable grades for hallways, kitchens and kids’ rooms, and semi-gloss or gloss for trims and doors. Outdoors, a low-sheen exterior membrane is the workhorse for walls, with gloss enamels for doors and feature joinery. Interior vs exterior paint FAQs

What is the difference between interior and exterior paint?

Exterior paint is built for UV, weather and movement; interior paint is formulated for washability, a smooth finish and low odour indoors.

Can I use exterior paint inside?

It is not recommended. Exterior paints can have higher odour and VOCs and are designed for durability rather than interior finish and air quality.

Can I use interior paint outside?

No. Interior paint lacks the UV and weather resistance to survive outdoors and will fade, chalk and peel quickly.

Is exterior paint more expensive?

Usually yes, because it contains more durable resins and UV-stable additives, but it lasts far longer outdoors.
