A tired fence undoes a freshly painted house

Boundary fencing is the largest continuous surface on most Perth blocks, and it sits right in the street view. A faded fence can make a freshly painted house look tired.

It also takes the most abuse: full sun, no eave, reflected heat off paving and, near the coast in suburbs like Cottesloe, salt spray. Fencing weathers much faster than the house behind it.

The upside is cost. Fence painting lifts the whole block for a fraction of the cost of an exterior repaint.

Fence types in Perth, and what each needs

Three fence types cover almost every Perth block, from Colorbond runs in estates like Canning Vale to rendered front walls. Each needs different preparation.

Colorbond fencing
The most common boundary fence in Perth. Its factory finish is made to shed things and fails by chalking, not peeling. We wash and degrease the chalk off, then apply a primer that keys into the existing coating. Skip that and the new coat lifts in sheets within a season. Done properly, a dated heritage green or beige fence becomes charcoal or monument for a fraction of replacement cost.
Timber fencing and gates
Jarrah, pine paling and treated timber all fail the same way: the sunny side goes grey and splits. Grey timber is sanded back to solid wood first, or the coating bonds to a surface already lifting. Timber takes exterior paint or a penetrating stain. Gates have hardware removed, edges sealed and bottom rails checked for rot.
Rendered and brick fencing
Common on front boundaries and around pools. Render is pressure cleaned, cracks filled with a flexible compound and chalky areas sealed before a flexible acrylic membrane. Exposed on both faces with no roof, boundary render moves more than a house wall. Face brick is cleaned and sealed first. Painting brick is a one-way decision.

How fence painting runs

Usually one to three days depending on run length and fence type.

01 Measure and assess
We measure the run, check both faces, and confirm the material and how it is failing. Rot, rust-through and movement get flagged, because coating a fence that needs a new panel wastes money.
02 Clean and degrease
Gardens and paving protected, then a pressure clean and degrease. On Colorbond this stage is the job: everything depends on the chalk being gone.
03 Prepare and prime
Timber sanded back, rust treated, and bare areas primed to suit: etch or adhesion primer on metal, exterior primer on timber, sealer on porous render.
04 Two coats, both faces
Two full coats of a UV-stable exterior system. We coat both faces where access allows and the neighbour agrees. On a corner block, a one-sided fence looks unfinished.

What fence painting costs in Perth

Fence painting is priced by linear metre and by how many faces are being coated.

We measure on site, because the two biggest price factors do not show in a photo.

Weathering. Heavily chalked Colorbond or badly greyed timber adds a full preparation stage.

Access to the neighbour’s side. It needs their agreement and can change how the job is staged.

A colour change from a dated heritage shade to charcoal looks like new fencing from the street.

Every price is a fixed written figure after we measure your fence, not an average. Quotes are free with no obligation.

Fence painting questions

Yes, with the right preparation. Colorbond fails by chalking, not peeling, so we wash and degrease the chalk off completely. Then a primer that keys into the existing coating goes on. Paint over the chalk and the new coat lifts within a season. Done properly, it holds its new colour for years, and a colour change costs a fraction of a new fence.

It is priced by lineal metre and by how many faces are coated. Heavily chalked Colorbond or greyed timber adds a preparation stage, and access to the neighbour's side can change the job. We measure on site and give a fixed written price. Coating a Colorbond fence usually costs a fraction of replacing it.

Yes, if they agree. On a corner block, or anywhere the fence is seen from the street, it is worth it, because a one-sided fence looks unfinished. It needs the neighbour's permission and access, so talk to them before we quote. Without access, we finish the top edge and returns cleanly so the join is not obvious.

It depends on what is left of the timber. If the boards are sound and just grey on the sunny side, sanding and coating gives years more life for a fraction of replacement cost. If bottom rails have rotted, palings are splitting through or posts have moved, it needs replacing. We will tell you honestly which you have.

Most residential fence runs take one to three days, depending on length, fence type and how much preparation the surface needs. Heavily chalked Colorbond or badly weathered timber adds a full day of cleaning and preparation before any coating goes on.
